In those countries of the East where our Lord appeared, the office of a shepherd is not only a lowly and simple office, and an office of trust, as it is with us, but, moreover, an office of great hardship and of peril. A classic characterization of Jesus is that he is priest, prophet, and king. As priest, he sanctifies, that is to say, he reestablishes the lost link between divinity and humanity; as prophet, he speaks and embodies the divine truth; and as king, he leads us on the right path, giving guidance to the human project.

On DecemJohn Henry Newman delivered a sermon at the height of the Oxford Movement when he was discovering the truth of Catholicism. He entitled this sermon “The Three Offices of Christ” and prophet the “three chief views which are vouchsafed to us of His Mediatorial was Prophet, Priest, and King.”.

John Henry Newman (21 February – 11 August ) was an English theologian and poet, first an Anglican priest and later a Catholic priest and cardinal, who was an important and controversial figure in the religious history of England in the 19th was known nationally by the mids, and was canonised as a saint in the Catholic Church in Alma mater: Trinity College, Oxford.

"There is under the Gospel but one proper priest, Prophet, and King, Altar, Sacrifice, and House of God. Unity is its characteristic sacrament; all grace flows from one Head, and all life circulates in the members of one Body, and what is true of priests and sacrifices, is true of righteous and holy men.

GOD, who didst bestow upon thy priest, Blessed John Henry Newman, the grace to follow thy kindly light and find peace in thy Church; graciously grant that, through his intercession and example, we may be led out of shadows and images into the fullness of thy truth; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and.

John Henry Newman has been characterized as perhaps the greatest Catholic theologian since Thomas Aquinas, and he was undoubtedly one of the most important theological influencers of the Second Vatican Council.

His work represents the first and most notable attempt to place Catholic thought in dialogue with the Enlightenment. 10 Quoted in John Coulson's Introduction to John Henry Newman, On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine (Sheed and Ward, New York, ), 11 Ibid.

I read what I thought was an essay in a high school literature class: “The Idea of the University” () by John Henry Cardinal Newman. It was something that, at one time, high school seniors read in literature class, and might show more than casual interest.

John Henry Newman thus continues in modern literature the Catholic tradition of East and West, sealing it with a martyr's faith and suffering, steadfast in loyalty to the truth, while discerning with a prophet's vision the task of the future.

He is spoken of as a prophet by Moses, as a prophet {53} like, but superior, to himself.—"A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; Him shall ye hear.".

Prophet, Priest and King: The Triplex Munus, the Church, and its Ministry The website of a (surprisingly, to me) popular and influential Christian network reports the group's attempt to configure its ministry along the lines of the "three-fold office" (triplex munus) of Christ, an idea often attributed to John.
